FOOD: The Insomnia-No-More: A curry that makes you fall asleep

Celebrity Indian chef and TV presenter Gurpareet Bains has made a curry that produces similar effects to sleeping pills.
People have reported feeling "tired and spaced out" within 20 minutes of eating it and a journalist said he was "almost comatose" after a taste test.
Gurpareet says he created the curry to try and help people sleep.
“This dish was designed with one thing in mind - to help people with insomnia.
"Its ingredients have been used for millennia for their tranquilising properties, and our research has shown it to work incredibly well,” he told reporters.

Hyenas That Think Outside the Box Solve Problems Faster

Innovative problem solving requires trying many different solutions. That's true for humans, and now Michigan State University researchers show that it's true for hyenas, too.
 http://images.sciencedaily.com/2012/08/120808163201-large.jpg?1344515583
The study, published in the current issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, presented steel puzzle boxes with raw meat inside to wild spotted hyenas in Kenya. To get the meat, the hyenas had to slide open a bolt latch. Even though most of the animals had many opportunities to open the box, only nine out of 62 hyenas succeeded. The successful hyenas tried more solutions, including biting, flipping or pushing the box, than the ones that failed, said MSU zoology graduate student Sarah Benson-Amram.
Another requirement for success was not being afraid to approach new things. The wild hyenas had never seen a steel puzzle box before. And those hyenas that quickly contacted the box when they first saw it were more successful solving the problem than those hyenas that were slower to approach it. Although contacting unknown objects can be quite dangerous for wild animals, this research shows that risk-taking also has some benefits.

SPORT: German weightlifter drops barbell on his head, walks away

Defending weightlifting gold medallist Matthias Steiner walked away from a terrifying incident on Tuesday when he dropped a barbell weighing 432 pounds on his neck during the Olympic 105+ kg competition.
The German was attempting to snatch 196 kg when his knees and arms buckled, causing the massive weight to fall on top of his head. Steiner collapsed under the barbell and instantaneously flopped while its mass bent his neck and head. He was immediately tended to by medical officials and somehow got to his feet, saluted the crowd and walked off under his own power.
He didn't return to the competition. The Associated Press reports Steiner went to the hospital for precautionary X-rays.
Steiner knew it was going wrong early in the lift. He tried to snatch anyway.
Organizers brought out a shade to block the crowd from seeing physicians and trainers attend to Steiner.
Thanks for the modesty, IOC. Once you've seen a 320-pound man drop 1.5 times his body weight on top of his head and flop around like a rag doll, it's good to cover him up. Wouldn't want to invade his privacy. (Meanwhile, the people sitting on the sides of the arena get a birds-eye view.)
But you can't keep a super-heavyweight weightlifter down. Steiner popped to his feet soon after and walked off to the cheers of the crowd.

IJEBU-ODE—A 42-year-old artisan was reported to have committed suicide on Monday night in Erigo, a suburb of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, over a N750,000 debt.
According to reports, the self-employed artisan and father of two, hanged himself in his residence  when his wife and children were out of the house.
It was also gathered that the artisan’s earlier attempts to kill himself were aborted because people  intervened.
During a visit at the late artisan’s residence in Odutola Ogunleye Street in Erigo, hundreds of sympathisers were seen discussing the tragedy.
The artisan was said to have taken the loan from a new generation bank in Ijebu-Ode, where his wife worked  before her sack.
It was also learnt that it was the shame of his inability to repay the loan, which he used to complete his house, that moved him to commit suicide.

Olympics: Team GB Olympic superfan dies while watching cycling

An Olympic super-fan who had hoped to attend an event on every day of the London Games has died while watching the cycling in the Velodrome...so sad..

Team GB fans watch cycling at the Velodrome
Conrad Readman from Colchester took two weeks off work and had tickets for every day of the Olympics, but suffered a suspected heart attack while watching Victoria Pendleton and the men's team pursuit last Friday.
The 49-year-old, who had been to the opening ceremony and seen many of Team GB's gold medal moments, was found ill in the venue's toilets before being sent to hospital, where he died.
Mr. Readman lived at home with his mother Joan. She told the Colchester Gazette of her devastation at the news.
"He had been looking forward to the Olympics ever since it was announced. There was never a day he was not excited about it," she said.
"He was coming home every night so excited and telling me about everything he had done.
"He had never had a problem with his heart and had not been to a doctor in 15 years. He died doing something he loved so I am happy he was where he was, but I can't watch any of it now."
Tim Peyton, his employer, added: "I have worked with him since 1982 and am shocked. He was a lynchpin for us. Clients and staff liked him.
"He will be sorely missed."
Mr. Readman was also a keen football fan. He had a season ticket with Tottenham and travelled the world to watch England play.

Asari Dokubo spits fire, threatens to bomb Hausa's in Niger/Delt

What the former Ijaw Youth Council president and founder of Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force said while addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday:

The arrogance of B/H is un-islamic. The type of bomb they are using is small small pikin bomb. If we begin, nobody will stay in Abuja.
We don’t manufacture bomb but we buy bombs & dynamites. I started armed struggle in the N/Delta. It's because of GEJ that we at quiet. Soon, we will not be able to guarantee our patience any more. If Ijaw people should retaliate, every household in the North will cry. It is the North that needs peace more than us.

SPORTS: Makhloufi destroys field to win Olympic 1500m gold

Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi celebrates as he wins the men's 1500m final during the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium
Leonel Manzano of the United States snatched silver 0.71s behind, with Morocco's Abdalaati Iguider taking bronze.
Makhloufi was reinstated to the final on Monday after initially being disqualified by the IAAF for not trying in his 800 metres heat.
His decision to rest his legs paid off as he sprinted away from the pack in an otherwise mid-paced race, finishing in a time of 3:34.08.
"It's the will of God. Yesterday I was out, today I'm in," Mahklouf said afterwards. "This is a gift for the Algerian people and for the whole of the Arabic world."
Kenya's favourites flopped, with Silas Kiplagat fading to seventh and defending champion Asbel Kiprop struggling with a hamstring problem in last place as they paid the price for failing to dictate a quick pace that would surely have kept the big-finishing North Africans and American out of contention.
Eyebrows have been raised at Makhloufi's two 1,500 runs in London, but he has form in similar circumstances - he won gold in this year's 800 at the African Championships with a quick finish after the East Africans got their tactics wrong.

Bolt still hankering after a Manchester United trial..(retirement plans)

Usain Bolt won his second consecutive gold medal in the Olympic 100m final on Sunday, but he's already back to talking about his desire to pursue a new challenge in a different sport (football).

He's said it before and now he's saying it again: he wants to play for Manchester United.
The Sun quotes Bolt as saying: "People think I am joking. But if Alex Ferguson called me up and said, 'OK let's do this, come and have a trial', it would be impossible for me to say no.
"I would not take up the challenge if I didn't think I was good enough. I am a very accomplished player and know I could make a difference.
"I would be the fastest player in the team — but I can play as well."
The 6ft 5in Jamaican added: "I am in Britain for a few more days. If Alex Ferguson wants to give me a call he knows where I am."

Phelps admits he pees in the pool..hehehehe..

When you become a legend, there is nothing bad in telling some needed funny truth, Michael Phelps may be the greatest Olympian of all-time but in certain other areas he is just like the rest of us, peeing in water.
Now the 18-time gold medalist has made the admission that, on occasions, he has relieved himself in the pool.
"I think everybody pees in the pool," said Phelps.
"It's kind of a normal thing to do with swimmers. You know, when we're in the water for two hours we don't really get out, you know, to pee. We just go whenever we're on the wall. Chlorine kills it so it's not bad."
The American, who has won 22 Olympic medals in total, also amazingly revealed that used to be afraid of water.

NEWS: How gunmen invaded our church – Survivors

One  of the survivors of Monday’s attack at Otite, near Okene,  Kogi State, has given a graphic account of how gunmen invaded their place of worship, the  Deeper Life Bible Church.
The survivor, Lawal Itopa, told one of our correspondents that it was by sheer miracle that he survived the horrible incident that has so far claimed about 20 lives.
Itopa,  who is currently receiving treatment at the Okene General Hospital,  said when the worshippers  commenced service in the church, they never had any premonition that the worst was about to happen.
He disclosed that the faithful started the service at about 6pm, but that the service was interrupted midway at about 7.30 pm when the generating set went off.
He pointed out that before the church members could ascertain the problem, two gunmen stormed the building.

Police try to unravel mystery of man with huge stash of fake IDs

Officials wonder whether Roy Antigua was a frequent guest at costume parties or whether he was hatching something sinister.
(CNN) -- Police in Florida are trying to solve a mystery surrounding a man arrested with an enormous stash of fake military, law enforcement and medical paraphernalia including federal badges, police radios and even a full NASA flight suit and helmet.
In all, Roy Antigua had about 200 suspicious items when he was arrested this month, said James Steffens, chief of the New Port Richey Police Department.
The cache found in Antigua's two homes and Cadillac Escalade included diplomatic license plates and dozens of fake identification cards from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Defense, CIA and NASA. The suspect also had access badges to hospitals around Florida, doctor and nurse scrubs, a respiratory technician badge, police blue lights and access stickers to Coast Guard bases around Florida, Steffens said.
Authorities are wondering if Antigua, 52, was a frequent guest at costume parties or if he was hatching something sinister.

Seven Cameroon athletes go missing....wi dem go na..

according to YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Seven Cameroon athletes have disappeared while in Britain for the London Olympics, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education said on Monday evening.
The seven - five boxers, a swimmer and a soccer player - are suspected of having left to stay in Europe for economic reasons.
"What began as rumor has finally turned out to be true. Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village," David Ojong, the mission head said in a message sent to the ministry.
Ojong said a reserve goalkeeper for the women's soccer team, Drusille Ngako, was the first to disappear. She was not one of the 18 finally retained after pre-Olympic training in Scotland.
While her team-mates left for Coventry for their last preparatory encounter against New Zealand, she vanished. A few days later, swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue and his personal belongings were also not found in his room.

New Technology Lets People Write Just With Their Eyes

New Technology Lets People Write Just With Their Eyes
Patients without the ability to use their limbs may have a new way to communicate, thanks to researchers in France. This offers hope to sufferers of strokes, spinal injuries, or degenerative diseases such as ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, who may be left without the ability to type, pick up a pen, or even speak.
The researchers developed a system that allows users to write in cursive on a video monitor using only their eyes. Dr. Jean Lorenceau of the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris has developed a method for translating eye movements into writing on a screen, and by doing so has simultaneously advanced possibilities for patients and solved a tricky puzzle posed by biology. The results are in today's issue of the journal Current Biology.

Hero Surgeon Dies in Lake Michigan Rescue Despite Wife's Efforts to Revive Him

Hero Surgeon Dies in Lake Michigan Rescue Despite Wife's Efforts to Revive Him (ABC News)
A surgeon plunged into Lake Michigan's waters roiled by rip tides and rough waves to save two young boys, but died despite his wife's frantic efforts to revive him with mouth to mouth resuscitation, police and his wife said today.
Dr. Donald Liu, chief of pediatric surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine's Comer Children's Hospital, saw the two boys, who were friends of the family, swept up in the water. Despite protests from his own children, who were scared about the dangerous conditions, Liu went in to save them.
"You couldn't stop him," Liu's wife, Dr. Dana Suskind, told ABCNews.com today. "He always did the right thing."
The two boys made it back to the shore near Cherry Beach in Chikaming, but Liu, 50, did not survive the 6-foot swells and treacherous currents.
"After he saved those boys and I couldn't see him, they finally found him and they pulled him from the water. I tried to do mouth-to-mouth, but I knew. And it was so painful," Suskind said between sobs.
The Coast Guard was responding to a call in a nearby area when they received the call to rescue Liu and were unable to get to him in time.
Conditions were ripe for a dangerous rip tide, said Erik Leuenberger, chief of response for the Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. The wind Sunday was 18 knots, which Leuenberger said was about 21 mph.
"When we see a pretty strong wind come from the northwest, it's going to create a strong rip current condition in the southeast part of the lake," Leuenberger said.
Three people drowned on Lake Michigan Sunday, Leuenberger said.
"Everything [Liu] did, everything he talked about was always for the children," said Jeffrey Matthews, chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine. "And so the tragedy is that he died, of course, as a hero doing what he did every day, which was saving children."
Suskind, crying at times, gave the emotional interview the day after her husband drowned because she wanted her three children to read about how great their father was.
"He wore scrubs all the time. He would've gotten married in his scrubs if he could. He was so understated, but really such a huge stature," Suskind said.
Despite long days in the office, Liu would always come home ready to play with his children Genevieve, 13, Asher, 10, and Amelie, 7. He especially loved throwing the baseball around, a pastime that meant a lot to Asher.
"I'm really sad that my dad died because every time he would come home from work at 5 o'clock, even though he didn't have to, he would play baseball with me and we would go in the backyard," Asher said. "We would always watch the White Sox together."
Asher said he hoped to continue the legacy of watching White Sox games with his family, in honor of his dad.
Liu was a passionate man and when he knew something was right, he didn't hesitate. Suskind said Liu told her he loved her on their second date and they were engaged three months later.
"It was actually meant to be," Suskind said.
They were married for more than 17 years, having met during their residencies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. Both Liu and Suskind worked at the University of Chicago Medicine since 2001.
"He was known as a selfless individual who was completely devoted to children," Matthews said.
"People will tell you that he's the heart and soul of our pediatric programs," Matthews said. "And always going the extra mile. He was tireless. You know, the kind of guy would operate all day and all night and say, 'Where do we have to go next?' And he would do whatever the children needed."
Chikaming Township's Assistant Police Chief Todd Taylor said, "It was a unique circumstance because this was a brave guy going out to try to help some kids."

Mona Lisa's skeleton found ?

A complete skeleton discovered beneath a nunnery in Italy could belong to the Mona Lisa herself.

The bones were unearthed below an altar within the derelict Convent of St. Orsola in Florence, archaeologists believe that the remains could belong to Lisa Gherardini, the woman who inspired Leonardo da Vinci's most famous work. Valeria D'Aquino and her colleagues had to dig down through over a foot of concrete to reach the crypt containing the bones. "That altar was certainly in use at Lisa Gherardini's time," she said.

The team hopes to use the remains to reconstruct Gherardini's face to see if it matches that of the famous painting that now hangs on the wall of the Louvre in Paris.

Archaeologists say they have found a complete skeleton buried beneath the floor of an abandoned nunnery in Florence, Italy, which might belong to Lisa Gherardini, the woman believed to have inspired Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

Is this the longest name of the Olympics?...hehehehe

I'm not entirely sure the last name of Iranian weightlifter Saeid Mohammadpourkarkaragh is the longest of the Olympics. There are almost 10,000 athletes at the Games and scanning through the rosters on the official website isn't an easy task.
But at 21 letters, it has to be close.

Birds That Live With Varying Weather Sing More Versatile Songs

A new study of North American songbirds reveals that birds that live with fluctuating weather are more flexible singers..you agree.....

Mixing it up helps birds ensure that their songs are heard no matter what the habitat, say researchers at Australian National University and the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.
To test the idea, the researchers analyzed song recordings from more than 400 male birds spanning 44 species of North American songbirds -- a data set that included orioles, blackbirds, warblers, sparrows, cardinals, finches, chickadees and thrushes.
