MYSTERY: Woman gives birth to Monkey-like Baby in Benue

It sure sounds unbelievable, but a young Nigerian woman has been delivered of a monkey-like monster in Otukpo, a popular town in Benue State. The outré event took place recently at St Theresa Hospital, Otukpo, when the woman said to be the wife of a hunter from Oju Local Government Area of the state gave birth to a creature that looks like a monkey.

The strange delivery came as a surprise to the already mother of nine the who had successfully delivered nine children in the past and was having her 10th child before the strange creature visited her.
According to an eyewitness, when the news broke out, residents of the town, especially those at the nearby Otukpo main market rushed to the hospital to see for themselves.
Describing the strange development as conginental malformation, Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Stanley Bwala said the malformation could have been forestalled if the woman was attending antenatal care regularly and advised pregnant women to always avail themselves to routine ante natal treatment.
However, it was gathered that as soon as the hunter heard about the delivery, he came and removed the monster from the hospital, even as observers believed the abnormal birth was a usual occurrence to hunters who have killed several animals during hunting.
In a brief chat with elder Adah Okoh, a traditional ruler in the area, he noted that in the Idoma tradition, such child should not be allowed to stay with the mother for fear of reincarnation. Asked if the monster should be buried alive or killed, elder Okoh said that should be left for the family to decide.
The world is surely coming to an end...

SCIENCE: £1.59bn rover due to land on Mars

The Mars rover Curiosity is designed to search for clues about possible past life on the Red Planet (AP/Nasa/JPL-Caltech)
A one-ton rover as big as a Mini is due to land on Mars on Monday in one of the most daring space missions ever attempted.
The rover, Curiosity, is designed to search for clues about possible past life in a crater that might once have been filled with water.
The £1.59 billion six-wheeled machine is twice as long and five times as heavy as the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity which landed on Mars in 2004.
Two British scientists are members of the team which will direct the rover and analyse the data it collects. Before they can do their work Curiosity must land safely on the Red Planet - a challenge that has tested the best brains at the American space agency Nasa.
Because Curiosity is so big and heavy, getting it onto the Martian surface has required a great deal of "thinking out of the box".

Alarm as deadly snake Hissing Sid slithers free in Plymouth

A potentially deadly snake is on the loose after evading a police helicopter which was scrambled to track it down.

Residents are on the lookout for a 4ft long constrictor which has been spotted slithering along pavements in Plymouth, Devon.

The reptile was briefly captured by three people who trapped it in a bin - but it is so strong it forced its way out and vanished up a drainpipe.A police helicopter was even diverted to scour the area on Saturday but the snake - nicknamed 'Hissing Sid' by locals - is still at large.

SPORTS: Phelps Sets All-Time Olympic Medal Record

U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps has broken one of the most coveted Olympic records, winning two more medals at the London games to set an all-time Olympic mark of 19.
Phelps won a silver medal Tuesday in the 200-meter butterfly and a gold in the 4X200-meter freestyle relay with teammates Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens. France took the silver in the relay, while China took the bronze.
Former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina previously held the Olympic medal record with 18.
Phelps swam the anchor in the relay to secure his third medal at the London Olympics, and his first gold at this year's Games.
South Africa's Chad Le Clos out-touched Phelps at the wall to win the gold in the 200-meter butterfly. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda took bronze in that race.
China's Ye Shiwen won her second gold of the games Tuesday in the 200 meter individual medley. Her stunning record-setting win Saturday in the 400 medley has everyone in London talking.
With a silver in the butterfly, Phelps failed to become the first male swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in the same event in three straight Games.
In women's gymnastics, the U.S. team won an Olympic gold medal for the first time since 1996.
The United States and China are far ahead in the total medal count.

Grin and Bear It: Smiling Facilitates Stress Recovery

Just grin and bear it! At some point, we have all probably heard or thought something like this when facing a tough situation. But is there any truth to this piece of advice? Feeling good usually makes us smile, but does it work the other way around? Can smiling actually make us feel better?

Allergies? Your Sneeze Is a Biological Response to the Nose's 'Blue Screen of Death'

New research suggests that sneezing is the body's natural reboot and that patients with disorders of the nose such as sinusitis can't reboot, explaining why they sneeze more often than others.
Who would have thought that our noses and Microsoft Windows' infamous blue screen of death could have something in common? But that's the case being made by a new research report appearing online in The FASEB Journal. Specifically, scientists now know exactly why we sneeze, what sneezing should accomplish, and what happens when sneezing does not work properly. Much like a temperamental computer, our noses require a "reboot" when overwhelmed, and this biological reboot is triggered by the pressure force of a sneeze. When a sneeze works properly, it resets the environment within nasal passages so "bad" particles breathed in through the nose can be trapped. The sneeze is accomplished by biochemical signals that regulate the beating of cilia (microscopic hairs) on the cells that line our nasal cavities.
