Story- Ikemba and the Cripple...Chapter 2

The sounds of several creatures in the great Ikuku forest kept the warriors and Ojinta alert, after a while roaming round the forest, Ojinta discovered that they were lost; he quickly suggested they went to the priest for guidance and protection. On reaching the shrine of the great priest of the Ikuku forest, the men greeted the wise one with humility. After a welcomed response from the priest, the priest said, “A bush meat does not run aimlessly in the forest, its either it is pursuing something or something is pursuing it, what bring you all to my shrine this cool evening. Ojinta bravely replied, “The great one, we are on a quest to rescue our princess from the warriors of Ikanga, we need your wise counsel, directions and protection as we embark on this quest”.

The priest danced around, singing some exciting incantations and calling aloud the name of the gods. Taking a strong gaze at Ojinta, the priest said, you must follow the path of the great Ikuma River, the river by the edge of the forest, continue on that path until you get to a very giant tree, then you are close to Ikanga. Looking at his men, Ojinta further asked, how do we defeat the Ikanga warriors, great one?. The priest said, take the water that is closest to the great tree of Ikanga, and sprinkle it on them to destroy their evil powers, then you can fight them as mere men, the priest added, make sure you take the King hostage, else the Princess will not be released from the charm used on her, with this, the priest instructed them to be on their way before the sun goes to sleep, he finally warned them not to eat any food that wasn’t prepared by their own hands.

Ojinta led his warriors as instructed, and he was much focused, taking note of each detail and encouraging the warriors not to be afraid. As night fell, they made a small camp, and rested the night there.  At dawn, Ojinta told the warriors that they shall not stop again, so as to reach their destination on time, after two days of their journey, on the third day, they could see the giant tree of Ikanga from afar, Ojinta was a bit relieved and the warriors showed a facial expression of gladness. The sounds of women and children could be heard from afar, possibly taking a bath, washing some clothes or fetching some water from the Ikuma River. One of the warriors, Amanze, suggested they rest till night falls, so they could enter the village undetected by anyone, but Ojinta told the men that they were not conversant with the roads in the village, hence he volunteered to go into the village, pretending to be a merchant, so as to take note of the road network, their king’s palace and the level of security present in the village, and if possible to know where the Princess is held hostage. Great plan shouted Abraka, one of the well-respected warriors.

At night fall, Ojinta is seen returning after much acclimatization of key places in the village, he whistled to inform the men that he was the one coming to prevent any attack.  The men prepared themselves, took enough water from the Ikuma River as instructed by the priest and quietly they walked towards the village with Ojinta leading the way. As they moved they heard a young girl screaming for help, three of the Ikanga warriors were about to rape her. Ikanga told four of the men to wait, as he went with Amanze and Abraka to locate who was shouting and why. Getting closer, they discovered it was a rape case and immediately they sprinkled the water on the men and killed them, the victim thanked them and promised to be of help to them for saving her life. They went quietly to the King’s palace, and it was the girl who tricked the palace guards away from the gate, giving the warriors an easy penetration into the palace. Ojinta shared the men around into three groups, one group was to rescue the Princess, and another was to kill any warrior that comes through the palace entrance, while the last group was to take the King and Queen as hostages. Each group succeeded, except those that went to save the princess, the fight with the Ikanga warriors protecting the Princess was very bloody, as none of the three warriors from lorji that went returned alive.

The palace was shaken as no one expected the ambush from the men from Lorji, realizing this, the Ikanga warriors took the Princess towards the palace, unknown to them that the King and Queen have been taken hostage, as they entered, Ojinta shouted, stop there, release the princess and undo the spell you placed on her now or I will kill your King and Queen, the men were reluctant, but the King instructed them to release the Princess for fear of death. Brave Ojinta released only the Queen, and told the men that he will only release the king when they had left unharmed from the village, the furious Ikanga warriors watched painfully as Ojinta left with his remaining three warriors, the girl they saved, the Princess and The King of Ikanga village.

As they moved away from the village, the Ikanga warriors followed quietly from behind, noticing this, Ojinta and his entourage moved towards the great Ikuma River, which was a change of plan, initially they had planned to rush to where their horses were and escaped, but that plan couldn’t worked, as a legion of Ikanga warrior followed them, getting to the river, Ojinta released the King, he told the men, the Princess and the Lady they rescued from the rapists to quickly hold each other as he mumbled some words, they immediately disappeared, leaving the King and Warriors of Ikanga in shock and disbelieve.
